Hun Many: Overcoming the Covid-19 Crisis Will Create a Unified Cambodia

PHNOM PENH: Young Member of Parliament, Hun Many, has said that the two years of the Covid-19 pandemic provided many lessons as well as confidence in the future of Cambodia, as during this period, the Cambodian people participated together in trusting the Royal Government and helping each other without prejudice and discrimination, reflecting a culture of sharing in traditional society, especially during a collective crisis.

Hun Many made a post on his official Facebook page on Wednesday, 1 June, expressing regret over the loss of life due to Covid-19, however, he said that compared to other countries, Cambodia was very successful in protecting the lives of the local people and preventing the maximum number of deaths from the virus.

In his post, he divided the magnitude and management of Covid-19 into two phases: prevention and free vaccination, and most importantly, trust in the government with the dedicated participation of all ministries, civil servants, armed forces, local authorities, doctors, and citizens, in implementing the action plan set by the government, showing the unity and understanding of "one society".

Hun Many wrote, "I am very proud as a Cambodian citizen to see and observe through the Covid-19 crisis, an emerging solidarity, showing hope that under any circumstances, solidarity, brotherhood, understanding, and helping one another are very real tenets in Cambodian society. It is this participation that has allowed Cambodia to achieve great success and gain international fame for its ability to control Covid-19 cases. More importantly, allowing the Cambodian economy and society to return back to normal as soon as possible. We are happy to gather once again."

As of 30 May 2022, Cambodia has identified a total of 136,262 cases of Covid-19 infections, including more than 3,000 deaths, while the vaccination campaign has thus far reached 94.01% of the total population of more than 16 million.

Cambodia reopened the country in November 2021 after successfully vaccinating 100% of the target population. With timely government response and measures implemented to curb the spread of the disease, Cambodia has become the second fastest country in the world to recover from the Covid-19 crisis, according to the Nikkei Covid-19 Recovery Index.
