Phnom Penh: ActionAid releases monitoring results of the Gender-based Violence Report; in the two months from April to May 2022, there were 70 cases of gender-based violence, most of which occurred on women and girls.
The follow-up results show that 69 cases of gender-based violence were caused by 72 men, and one case by one woman.
The victims of the 70 cases of gender-based violence included 48 women, 27 girls, and one man.
Of the 69 cases of violence perpetrated by men, 51% were physical abuse, 45% were sexual abuse, and 4% were psychological abuse.
This organization working on gender equality also released follow-up results on reporting gender-based violence to nine media outlets. They have observed that most of those news outlets continued to report without protecting the identities of the victims. Most of the reports do not take into account the provision of information that contributes to raising public awareness and changing attitudes in order to eliminate violence against women. However, they also observed that "most of the media has changed by not taking the cases of violence against women to report humorously or express the views of blaming the victims."
On 20 May 2022, Undersecretary of State for the Ministry of Women's Affairs and Chair of the Media Monitoring Group on Reporting of Violence Against Women, Bun Puthy, chaired a meeting on the prevention of violence against women and children. She said that the Ministry of Women's Affairs and the Task Force continue to monitor the implementation of the Media Code of Conduct for Reporting Violence Against Women and Children in all walks of life in order to contribute to finding solutions to help women everywhere and give them the knowledge to apply with the family.
She said that through the work progress, the implementation, as well as the challenges in implementing the work, the meeting reviewed and decided on monitoring tools to respond to the Code of Conduct for reporting violence against women more effectively.
As a result, the meeting decided to set up a technical working group to discuss and study the expansion of the scope of media monitoring and to find more relevant partners for support. The meeting also requested the inclusion of other relevant partners to attend the next quarterly meeting, as well as conduct studies to revise and add members of the working group to monitor the implementation of this code.
In response to the Actionaid report, the meeting discussed and commented on the implementation of additional activities based on progress and experiences, as well as overcoming challenges, shortcomings, and developments in society.
