Urban Artists Paint Graffiti in Celebration of 200 Years of Brazil's Independence

INTERNATIONAL: Graffiti artists from all over Brazil spray-painted on Tuesday (May 17) 11 freedom-theme illustrations at the Three Powers Plaza in Brasilia to celebrate the South American nation's 200th anniversary of independence.

The effort is part of the Supreme Court's program to combat misinformation, fake news, and hate speech. Each illustration corresponds to the content of the article by the Supreme Court Ministers on civil liberties as part of the Liberties Project booklet aimed to inspire young communities.

The artists were selected by the founder of the Carioca Graffiti School and the Graffiti Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Rafael Araujo dos Santos Barbosa.

Amazonian-born graffiti artist, Chermie Ferreira said that her artwork generally focuses on economic freedom, and that is why she chose to paint an Indigenous woman who is knitting clothes to generate income for the indigenous people.

The Liberties Project book will be released in August according to the Supreme Court, and it will feature all the graffiti illustrations with summaries of the ministers' articles.
