Cambodia in the list of champion countries that implement the World Convention on Migration

Phnom Penh: Cambodia is one of the 36 countries in the world that is considered by the United Nations to implement the Global Compact for Safe Orderly and Regular Migration. UN also invited the Cambodian delegation to share their experiences and receive additional input for inclusion in this international treaty.

A delegation led by Secretary of State for the Ministry of Interior and Permanent Vice President of National Committee for Counter Trafficking (N.C.C.T), Ms. Chou Bun Eng, and Secretary of State for the Ministry of Social Affairs, Mr. Nhek Vannara, along with representatives of four other ministries and institutions, will leave Cambodia for New York, USA. May 14, 2022.

Speaking to EAC News on the afternoon of May 14, Ms. Chou Bun Eng said that it is an honor for Cambodia to share its work and efforts in implementing the Convention on Migration after joining in the year 2018.

"Cambodia was chosen, as if there were only two or three countries to be panelists to share their experiences of what they did to be successful and what should be done next, and we will evaluate the new declaration says that what should we improve the convention because now it is after the Covid crisis in the phase where we live with Covid."

The Global Compact by the majority of UN Member States at an Intergovernmental Conference in Marrakesh, Morocco, followed closely by a formal endorsement by the UN General Assembly on 19 December. The Global Compact is designed to Support international cooperation on the governance of international migration, Provided a comprehensive menu of options for States from which they can select policy options to address some of the most pressing issues around international migration and give states the space and flexibility to pursue implementation based on their own migration realities and capacities.

According to Ms. Chou Bun Eng, Cambodia has responded to this pact by cracking down on human trafficking, and has developed a number of policies and principles, including inclusion in the education system, health considerations about migration, also preparing a 10-year plan for the implementation of migration-related work.

Cambodia has been downgraded by the US State Department for three consecutive years from 2019 to 2021 on the Anti-Trafficking Monitoring List. In a report released in July 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs classified Cambodia as a Tier 2 Watchlist, citing the Cambodian government's lack of accountability and no willing to investigate, prosecute and prosecute human traffickers, lack of a crime prevention system.

Ms. Choun Bun Eng stated that government did not think about the score they give, but what the government does is, think of the results rather than the score of the evaluator. She stated that the government has already worked to protect the safety and security of the majority of the people and has a lot of work to do to eliminate these problems.

"People who work with us only know what we are doing," she said. As for the critic, maybe they never got involved, they just sat and watched the mistakes, so they pretended to be wrong if they sat and saw. But if you go deep, they will know what we are doing? We also want to appeal that if they want to know, get closer, not far, because it is invisible from a distance.
