PHNOM PENH: An AN-M66 (AN-M34) type aerial bomb weighing close to 2,000 pounds, or one ton, was found in Phnom Penh on Thursday, 5 May. This discovery was announced by the Director General of the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC), Heng Ratana.

The giant bomb was discovered in the Chaktomuk river, near the Sokha Hotel in Phnom Penh’s Chroy Changvar district, and opposite the Royal Palace.

The CMAC Director General explained that if this AN-M66 bomb had exploded, it would have caused major damage to the surrounding hotels and houses, and even the Royal Palace. He underlined this finding as a great instance of luck for Cambodians.

Working closely with Phnom Penh’s governor, CMAC bomb experts have transported the unexploded aerial bomb to a safe area for further action to be taken by the CMAC.
