Chinese mainland reports 5,646 new local COVID-19 cases

INTERNATIONAL: The Chinese mainland on Thursday reported 5,646 new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases and 9,942 local asymptomatic cases, said the National Health Commission (NHC) in its daily report on Friday.

Of the new local cases, 5,487 were reported in Shanghai, 47 in Beijing, 42 in Jilin, 31 in Zhejiang, seven each in Shandong and Guangdong, four each in Heilongjiang and Jiangxi, three each in Inner Mongolia, Jiangsu and Sichuan, two in Henan, and one each in Liaoning, Fujian, Hunan, Guangxi, Chongqing and Yunnan.

The locally-transmitted tally included 5,125 cases re-categorized from asymptomatic ones. Specifically, 5,062 were reported in Shanghai, 31 in Jilin, 28 in Zhejiang, one each in Liaoning, Shandong, Henan and Yunnan.

A total of 52 new deaths, all local cases in Shanghai, were reported on Thursday, and no new local suspected cases were reported.

A total of 13 new imported COVID-19 cases were reported on the Chinese mainland on Thursday, with three in Guangdong, two each in Beijing, Shanghai and Fujian, and one each in Heilongjiang, Zhejiang, Guangxi and Sichuan.

On Thursday, 2,796 patients were discharged from hospital after recovery, including 2,782 local ones and 14 imported ones, and 28,159 close contacts were released from medical observation.

Meanwhile, the number of severe cases increased by 18 compared with the previous day.

As of Thursday, the Chinese mainland cumulatively reported 18,163 imported cases, with no deaths.

Among them, 17,981 were discharged from hospital after recovery and 182 remained in hospital, with no severe cases.

By the end of Thursday, the accumulative number of confirmed COVID-19 cases on the mainland reached 214,243, including 28,317 still receiving treatment, and 417 of them are in severe conditions. There were no suspected cases on the mainland as of Thursday, according to the commission.

Altogether 180,951 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital, with 4,975 deaths from the virus, the commission said.

By Thursday, 3,345,519 close contacts were traced, of whom 455,300 were still under medical observation.

A total of new 10,029 asymptomatic carriers were detected on the Chinese mainland on Thursday, including 87 from abroad and 9,942 reported locally, with 9,545 in Shanghai.

In addition, about 330,488 confirmed cases were cumulatively reported in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) as of Thursday, including 9,287 deaths.

A total of 82 cases were reported in the Macao SAR, with all of them recovered. And a total of 88,446 cases including 860 deaths were logged in the Taiwan region of China.
