That's A No-No': Trump On Putin's Nuclear Threat

INTERNATIONAL: Former U.S. President Donald Trump said it was unacceptable that Russian President Vladimir Putin was using what Trump called the "N-word" – the word 'nuclear', so often.

In a clip from the interview with British television presenter Piers Morgan on April 11 at the Mar-a-Lago resort, Trump said this was a "no-no", adding due to Putin's nuclear threats "everybody is so afraid, so afraid, so afraid. And as they're afraid he uses it more and more. That's why he's doing the kind of things he's doing right now."

Answering the question of what he would do if he was in Biden's shoes, Trump said he would verbally threaten Putin with the U.S.'s military power.

 PIERS MORGAN, conversation with Trump:

"So what would you do right now in Ukraine, if you were the President?"

TRUMP: "Putin uses the ‘N word’. I call it the ‘N word’. He uses the ‘N word’, the nuclear word all the time. That's a no-no, you're not supposed to do that. He uses it on a daily basis. And everybody's so afraid, so afraid, so afraid. And as they're afraid he uses it more and more. That's why he's doing the kind of things he's doing right now."

MORGAN: "That’s right. He’s preying off the fear."

TRUMP: "He's doing them because he thinks nobody's gonna ever attack us. Because they're all stupid, and they're afraid to talk about it."

MORGAN: "I totally agree with you. So what would you do about it?"

TRUMP: "... and instead of ... excuse me... It's a little complicated. Instead of, you know, kowtowing, instead of Biden saying ‘Oh, he's got nuclear weapons', he keeps saying he's got nukes. We have better weapons, we have the greatest submarine power in history."

MORGAN: "So what would you say and do?"

TRUMP: "I would say, we have far more than you do ... Far, far more powerful than you. And you can't use that word ever again. You cannot use the nuclear word ever again. And if you do, we're gonna have problems."

During the military buildup preceding the invasion of Ukraine, Trump praised Putin as a "genius." Once the attack had commenced, he condemned it as "appalling."

Trump has previously addressed his past praise, saying he was correct that Putin was smart because he was outfoxing world leaders and NATO.

During his time in office, Trump dogged criticisms that he was too friendly toward Moscow. The U.S. intelligence community found that Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election to boost his chances of winning the White House. Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s report determined Trump's campaign had numerous contacts with Russian officials but that there was not enough evidence to establish a criminal conspiracy.
