Cambodia Attends ASEAN-China Special Meetings

Phnom Penh, 7 June 2021: Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, Mr. Prak Sokhon, is leading the country’s delegation to Chongqing, China, to attend two high-level meetings on 7-8 June 2021.

Today is the ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers’ Special Meeting, as part of the 30th anniversary of the first ASEAN-China Foreign Ministers' Meeting. The ASEAN and Chinese Foreign Ministers are expected to review progress of cooperation in various fields, as well as discuss how to enhance the ASEAN Strategic Partnership. Covid-19 is also high on the agenda.

Tomorrow sees the 6th Mekong-Lanchang Foreign Ministers' Meeting, during which the past five years will be reviewed as the group looks to develop areas for future cooperation. The talks will take place within the context of Covid-19 and look at ways to deepen mutual support among the Mekong countries and China in the spirit of promoting sustainable development.

On his two-day working visit, Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister will also meet with China’s Foreign Minister, during which two documents will be ceremoniously signed. The first is the “Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation in the Field of Telecommunications, Information and Communication Technology”. The second is the “Project Program on Cultural Cooperation” between the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts of Cambodia and the Ministry of Culture of China. Other bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of the Mekong region have also been scheduled.
