Prime Minister Reveals How Cambodia Borrowed Money from Japan, Repaid Japan, and Built Cambodia

Phnom Penh: Prime Minister Hun Sen talked about the way in which Japan has helped Cambodia to get rid of its debt and build Cambodia.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the achievements in the Flood Protection Project in Phnom Penh this morning, 20 April 2022, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that after Cambodia ended the war, the debt, borrowed from Japan during Lon Nol's administration, doubled plus additional fines, and thus, Japan decided to stop lending to Cambodia.

The Prime Minister added that Japan has rejected Cambodia's debt cancellation request, but there was one way that Cambodia could pay off its debt; it was to sell Japanese materials and put the money back in the Japanese repayment account. The Prime Minister said that Japan did not take the money that Cambodia paid back, but let Cambodia keep the money to develop the nation.

The Prime Minister thanked Japan for the continuous support of Cambodia since Cambodia was freed from the Khmer Rouge genocidal regime to the present.
