U.S. Says Russia Sanctions Give China 'Good Understanding' Of Consequences If It Supports Moscow

INTERNATIONAL: U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman on Wednesday (April 6) said that the range of sanctions imposed on Russia for its war in Ukraine should give China's leader Xi Jinping a "good understanding" of the consequences China could face if it provides material support to Russia.

Sherman made the remarks at a U.S. House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee hearing.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen also issued a warning to China that Treasury was prepared to turn its sanctions tools against Beijing in the event of Chinese aggression against Taiwan, which China claims as a wayward province.

Asked if the United States would take such steps if Taiwan was threatened, she said: "Absolutely. I believe we've shown that we can. In the case of Russia, we threatened significant consequences. We've imposed significant consequences. And I think that you should not doubt our ability and resolve to do the same in other situations."

U.S. DEPUTY SECRETARY OF STATE, WENDY SHERMAN, SAid:

"If China, in any way shape or form, provides material support to Putin this premeditated, unjust, and unprovoked invasion, there will be consequences. I think one only has to look at the range of sanctions - more to be announced today - against Putin, against the economy, against individuals who are enablers, against elites, against oligarchs, export controls, designations, sanctions that are not only from the United States, but in unprecedented fashion, coordinated with our allies and partners - not just in Europe but throughout the world - gives President Xi, I think, a pretty good understanding of what might come his way should he, in fact, support Putin in any material fashion. This is a very serious matter that we take quite seriously."
