Electric Vehicle Growth in Cambodia Increases by More than 600% in the First Three Months of 2022

PHNOM PENH: The Minister of Public Works and Transports stated that the use of registered electric vehicles in Cambodia started in 2020. He said that at the beginning of 2022, the number of registered electric vehicles increased sharply, 47 vehicles were registered in the first three months of this year, compared to only 7 units in the same period in 2021.

Speaking at the Electric Vehicle Showcase and Inauguration Ceremony of EV Charging Stations on the morning of 26 March 2022 at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, Minister of Public Works and Transport, Senior Minister Sun Chanthol said that the number of electric vehicles registered were only 2 units in 2020 and 62 units in 2021, while he noted that the number of registrations in the first three months of 2022 was 47 units compared to the same period last year in 2021, there were only 7 units, the increase in registrations increased by 671 percent.

He said: "The development and growth of the use of electric vehicles is an indispensable part of the development process of the road and transport sector in Cambodia, as well as the national economy; on the whole, it is especially [important] to reduce the poverty of Cambodians who spend a lot of money to buy fuel for their vehicles.”

Cambodia plans to increase the use of electric vehicles by 40% and electric motorcycles by 70% by 2050.

Senior Minister Sun Chanthol stated that achieving this goal requires the participation of all ministries, institutions, and stakeholders to formulate and implement policies, strategic plans and effective and efficient measures to promote, support and encourage the development and the use of electric vehicles, in which the focus is on strategic attraction to increase the use of electric vehicles, increase the establishment of electric vehicle charging stations, and control the recycling and safe disposal of batteries.
