UK PM Johnson Says Putin Has Crossed Red Line Into Barbarism

INTERNATIONAL: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Thursday (March 24) accused Russia of crossing a red line into barbarism in its war with Ukraine and has said the West needed to "tighten the vice" in sanctions to bring the conflict to an end.

Johnson has also said in Brussels when he has attended an unprecedented one-day trio of NATO, G7 and EU Summits, more sanctions needed to be imposed.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has sent his troops into Ukraine on what he calls a "special military operation" to demilitarize and "denazify" Ukraine. Moscow denies targeting civilians.

Johnson has said support to Ukraine was moving away from resistance and more towards supporting Ukrainian defence of their own country.

Putin's ambition to "intimidate NATO", Johnson has said, was having the opposite effect and NATO had increased its presence on the eastern borders.

Leaders are expected to agree to deploy four new combat units in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary and Slovakia to further reassure countries on its eastern flank.

Asked about a bid by Russia to host the Euro 2028 football tournament, Johnson has said the idea was "beyond satire".
