Olympic Champion Kjeld Nuis Breaks Speed World Record

INTERNATIONAL: Olympic speed skating champion Kjeld Nuis followed up his Beijing heroics with another remarkable achievement, as the Dutchman broke through the 100kph barrier to set a new speed world record.

Nuis, who set the world record four years ago with a speed of 93kph, reached 103kph along with a 3km-long natural ice rink on Norway's Savalen Lake while skating behind a windshield.

KJELD NUIS, SAYING:

“I skated a world record. I hit 103 kilometers an hour. Four years ago, I did 93 kilometers an hour. That last part is really hard. It sounds just like a little gap, but it was really hard to do. I literally flew over the ice. When there was a little bump, I just flew, and was a crazy feeling. I gave it all. When he said 92 kilometers per hour, I started sprinting and then I heard Erben (Wennemars, former Dutch speed skater) coming out of the car yelling, so, I thought, yeah, this was it. I'm super proud.”

Nuis successfully defended his 1,500m speed skating gold at the Beijing Olympics in February, adding to his 1,500m and 1,000m titles from Pyeongchang in 2018.
