PHNOM PENH: The Prime Minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen, and the Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio, reaffirmed their joint intention to develop the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port into a high potential port in the region, namely to promote this port to become a big international port.

Speaking at a joint press conference on the night of 20 March 2022, Prime Minister Hun Sen said that in the future, with the contribution of Japan, the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port will become not only important for Cambodia but also an important port in the region.

This is an agreement between the two prime ministers after more than two hours of meeting on the evening of March 20.

The Prime Minister of Japan, Kishida Fumio, confirmed in a press conference tonight that Cambodia is a country full of potential.

He was confident in the country's economic growth and stated that Japan would support Cambodia in achieving its goal of transforming the port of Sihanoukville into a regional port.

Sihanoukville Autonomous Port was first built in 1956 and resumed operations after 1979. In 2022, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will help and build more container ports to make it more convenient and efficient.

At the end of 2022, Sihanoukville Port is planning to expand the port area by extending the length of 350 meters and a depth of 14 meters and a half, which will allow ships with a capacity of up to 4,000 containers to enter the port.
