13-Year-Old Drove Pickup That Collided With Van Killing 9 in Texas

INTERNATIONAL: A 13-year-old was driving a 2007 Dodge 2500 pickup truck that collided with a 2017 Transit towing an eight-foot cargo trailer in Texas, killing nine people, including six members of a New Mexico college's men's and women's golf team and a coach, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board said on Thursday ,March 17.

The child and a man traveling in the truck also died.

The truck’s left front tire, which was a spare tire, also blew out before impact.

Although it was unclear how fast the two vehicles were traveling, it was clearly a high-speed collision.

One must be 14 in Texas to start taking classroom courses for a learner’s license and 15 to receive that provisional license to drive with an instructor or licensed adult in the vehicle. Department of Public Safety Sgt. Victor Taylor said a 13-year-old driving would be breaking the law.

USW, a private Christian university in Hobbs, New Mexico, had said its van was carrying nine people, seven of whom died and said two others were in critical condition at a Texas hospital.
