UPDATE: Death Toll Rises to Four in Angpo Squeeze Incident; Compensation for Victims Announced
Phnom Penh: The death toll from the Angpo squeeze incident has risen to four, with the deceased to receive 15 million riels each and the injured to receive 4 million riels each.
The incident took place on the morning of January 23, 2025, when people squeeze to get Angpo occurred in front of Oknha Sok Kong's house in Sangkat Phsar Thmey 3. Currently, five individuals remain in intensive care, according to Mr. Sam Wichka, spokesperson for the Phnom Penh Municipal Police.
In response to the tragedy, Oknha Sok Kong has donated 10 million riels to each of the deceased’s families and 2 million riels to those injured. Additionally, Mr. Khuong Sreng, the Governor of Phnom Penh, has contributed 5 million riels to each deceased victim's family and an extra 2 million riels for the injured, as well as providing coffins for the deceased.
Mr. Sok Penhvuth, the Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, delivered these funds to the victims’ families at the hospital today.

Phnom Penh, January 23, 2025 — A gathering at Oknha Sok Kong’s residence on Preah Norodom Street in Phsar Thmey 3, Daun Penh District, resulted in three deaths and six injuries this morning, just days before the Chinese New Year celebrations.
Hundreds of people gathered at Sok Kong’s residence to receive traditional Chinese angpao (red envelope). As the crowd increased, many attendees began to feel dizzy and faint. Initial reports indicate that three individuals died while being transported to the hospital, and six others were taken by ambulance for treatment.
Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng and local authorities arrived at the scene promptly to assist with the transport of the injured and to manage traffic, facilitating the dispersal of the crowd.
