Cambodia to Start Smart Transportation System in 2023

Phnom Penh: The Royal Government of Cambodia is now preparing a master plan for the Smart Transportation System which is scheduled to be operational by early 2023. This is aimed to promote the transportation sector in Cambodia to be more efficient. The project assisted by the Republic of Korea is scheduled for completion in 2022 and a pilot run in 2023. Director General of the General Department of Land Transport Chhuon Won met virtually with his Korean counterpart to discuss the master plan for the project under the support of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Won has expressed gratitude to the Government of the Republic of Korea, especially the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport of Korea and the Korea Research Center for their support in developing a master plan for the Smart Transportation System for Cambodia. He says, "Today, modern technology really gives us all the opportunity to develop the transportation sector, including: Electric cars are in use today. In order to adapt to this technological advancement, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) needs to update and develop a master plan for intelligent transportation systems to effectively address and address current transportation-related issues and outline its commitment - the spirit of the Ministry to coordinate with the relevant ministries-institutions, civil society and all stakeholders to develop this project successfully.”

The Republic of Korea has approved the Smart Transportation System Project under the guidance of the of Official Development Assistance to help improve the Cambodian transport sector with the cooperation of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport of Cambodia, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in Korea and the Korea Overseas Construction Association. This system is a modern technology that can be used to manage the road network, facilitate the management and control of transportation in real time. It can also collect and use traffic information in real time without causing environmental impact and as a data collection system. The information that will be analyzed can help the traffic to run smoothly.

The Smart Transportation System Project is scheduled to be completed in August 2022, with a pilot run in 2023 to be conducted at Cambodia's new airport, satellite city around Phnom Penh, and along major national road networks such as National Road 1, National Road 4 and National Road 5.
